Praise of Shadows

In Praise of Shadows is an architectural pavilion that creates a microcosm within the setting in which it is situated. It offers a place for rest and contemplation, a moment with the inner self amidst the bare setting of the Zappeion plaza.

We are fascinated by purposeless structures, follies that serve no pre-defined use other than elevating the senses and creating a conversation with the context, an ever-changing impression through time and response to the moment.

In the context of Art Athina, In Praise of Shadows becomes a landmark point, a sculptural element, a spatial installation, and a shelter from the Athenian sun, referencing garden structures found at the nearby National Garden.

Measuring 4m tall and wide, the all-aluminum lightweight structure is constructed out of a set of parts formed by 12 radially arrayed prismatic modules and assembled within an hour; it is transportable, reusable, recyclable, and re-configurable.
