Flatiron Skyline
New York, USA
2016
OoCI and LOT won the invited competition by the Van Alen Institute to create an interactive monumental public installation at New York’s Flatiron Building Plaza, following an open brief to create an element of public attraction, with the project awarded in November 2016. The studio fabricated and installed a modular LED-lit arched steel structure with six hanging urban hammocks.
Flatiron Sky-Line created a dynamic new social space underneath its illuminated arches. The structure invited visitors to walk within and around it, gaze through it toward the skyline, and experience the Flatiron District’s surroundings through a unique lens.
Time Out New York made a film that had 7.4M views within the three months of installation. Artnet named Skyline among the not-to-be-missed installations in December 2016.
In the summer of 2017, the Musée National des Beaux-arts du Québec installed Skyline at the entry plaza of their newly built art museum as a celebration of its opening, with local residents and visitors flocking to spend time at the museum’s alternative new public art.
