LIGHTS ON

OoCI won the invited competition for the main installation in Bergamo for the occasion of the Italian Capital of Culture 2023. The installation is fully sponsored by Confindustria Bergamo and was selected as part of the international contest launched in collaboration with the City of Bergamo and GAMeC.

The project was selected for its ability to interact with the surrounding architecture, thus creating a welcoming and inspiring space for all the people who will come to the square during this year of celebrations.

Avalon managed both the Project and Construction Management of the installation.

LIGHTS ON incorporates a large site-specific light sculpture which begins as a stand-alone art piece that spreads and travels through a hard-scape floor and several curated seating blocks that all tie together to become a public art piece which creates stages for public interaction along the plaza. 

LIGHTS ON is based on the concepts of ‘reuse, reactivate, renew’, since each of its components is designed to be recycled. The light sculpture which lights up the entire square is placed in front of the state building alongside marble sculptures placed throughout the square. The fountain is reactivated by an elevated rubber structure around it, offering citizens a place to sit and gather.

This public space is activated across all scales, simultaneously extending to the entirety of the plaza, and renewing this otherwise desolate location by inserting an element of joyful fun into it.
